PhD project:

„Individual-based modelling of diel vertical migration of fish “

(DFG Me 1686/5-2, AQUASHIFT)

Supervisor: Thomas Mehner (IGB)

Lake Stechlin is a deep oligotrophic lake in northern Germany. The pelagic area of the lake is exclusively inhabitat by sympatric species, the common European vendace (Coregonus albula) and the endemic Fontane cisco (Coregonus fonatanae) which have evolved after the last glaciation. Both species perform diel vertical migration within the hypolimnion. Because previous studies have shown that depth distribution and migration pattern of C. albula and C. fontanae are strongly linked to water temperature and thermal stratification of the lake, global warming is expected to influence fitness and behavior of fish.

My work focuses on the development and programming of individual-based models to simulate diel vertical migration. I want to investigate behavioral strategies as a response to changing environments and assess the potential of organisms for adaptation.
