Structure and dynamics of fish assemblages in large rivers, waterways and urban waters

In stochastic, disturbance-dominated systems, the fish community structure will be mainly determined by environmental factors. This research aims to develop a mechanistic understanding on the effects of various environmental, in particular hydrodynamic factors, but also to characterize the environmental tolerance of native and immigrating fish species, to identify key habitats, structures and functions for a water type specific, species-rich fish community.

Studies of environmental history aim to analyse larger time-scales as well as the importance of historic events and changes for the actual structure of fish communities, and to identify significant impacts or events. In addition, the importance of extreme events (land use changes, extreme flood and draught events) for the resilience and stability of river systems will be analyzed. Therefore, humans are considered as essential part of the systems studied. Accordingly, rehabilitation will be analysed as adaptive management and contribution to gain high ecological efficiency without compromising existing uses, i.e. to the ecological potential. Recreational fisheries is studied as an especially closely linked social-ecological system within the ADAPTFISH project. These studies are part of the program domain human-environment interactions.
