Research interest
Fish genetics and breeding:

Specific research is focused on the study of the genetic structure of cultured and wild populations of freshwater fish as well as the genetics of qualitative and quantitative traits of species that are already utilized or have the potential for future utilization in aquaculture. The genetic variability within and between fish populations is assessed by analysis of polymorphisms of the gene products (enzymes) and/or DNA. Comparative studies of economically important traits (growth, food conversion, vitality and product quality) are accompanied by the genetic characterization of different fish strains. Recently, methods for isolation of microsatellite loci from the genome of various fish species have been established.

Current research projects:

- Studies on the genetic variability of German and foreign wild and cultured common carp populations

feral carp (Cyprinus carpio) caught in the river Rhine, Germany

- Genetic characterization and performance testing of wild and cultured tench strains

- Genetics of quantitative and qualitative traits in rainbow trout

- Genetic identification of wild Atlantic salmon used for the reintroduction program: Elblachs 2000

Mature male Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from Lachsbach, Germany
