Citizen scientists sampled more than 600 rivers, streams, lakes and ponds across Germany. The samples have now been analysed by researchers under the auspices of IGB. In this way, a unique data set emerged that provides evidence of three Germany-wide trends: first, microorganisms in the sediment show signs of chemical stress and antibiotic resistance in their genetic material. Second, excessive artificial lighting at night alters the species composition of underwater microorganisms. And third, all studied water bodies emit greenhouse gases.

Lena Heinrich has received the Schwoerbel-Benndorf Young Scientist Award of the German Society for Limnology. The former IGB doctoral student completed her thesis in the research group of Michael Hupfer as part of the international DFG Graduate School "Urban Water Interfaces". 

IGB has provided feedback on the EU action plan for better nutrient management.

“Those calling for more dams in response to drought and dry riverbeds have nothing understood – they promote habitats with potential for catastrophy,” wrote Christian Wolter in Terra X – Die Wissens-Kolumne.

In the Oder River, a massive algal bloom can be detected with satellite data. In close coordination with the IGB, satellite data from the European Copernicus satellite Sentinel 2 were processed.

Odra jest ostatnią dużą rzeką w Niemczech, gdzie ryby i inne zwierzęta mogą jeszcze swobodnie migrować na długich odcinkach. Od 2006 r. Odra jest głównym obszarem reintrodukcji jesiotra bałtyckiego. Gatunek ten znajduje się na Czerwonej Liście Międzynarodowej Unii Ochrony Przyrody (IUCN); żadna inna grupa zwierząt nie jest obecnie bardziej zagrożona niż jesiotr. Teoretycznie młode jesiotry mogły po raz pierwszy wylęgnąć się w Odrze z ikry dorosłych osobników powracających tego lata do rzeki. Niestety wtedy nastąpiła katastrofa ekologiczna spowodowana przez człowieka.

Naturalne przyczyny tej zaistniałej katastrofy są mało prawdopodobne. Ostatnie badania wzmocniły podejrzenie, że w Odrze masowo rozwinęły się toksyczne glony słonawowodne.
