Intact peatlands are habitats for many rare animal and plant species and important sinks for greenhouse gases. Many peatlands that have been converted to agricultural land should therefore be restored. A current study with IGB participation discusses different strategies for this. The authors make clear that the most commonly used method of flooding former peatlands is problematic.

IGB has provided feedback on the EU action plan for better nutrient management.

“Those calling for more dams in response to drought and dry riverbeds have nothing understood – they promote habitats with potential for catastrophy,” wrote Christian Wolter in Terra X – Die Wissens-Kolumne.

Gatunek ten znajduje się na Czerwonej Liście Międzynarodowej Unii Ochrony Przyrody (IUCN); żadna inna grupa zwierząt nie jest obecnie bardziej zagrożona niż jesiotr. Teoretycznie młode jesiotry mogły po raz pierwszy wylęgnąć się w Odrze z ikry dorosłych osobników powracających tego lata do rzeki. Niestety wtedy nastąpiła katastrofa ekologiczna spowodowana przez człowieka.

Neueste Untersuchungen erhärten den Verdacht, dass die Massenentwicklung einer giftigen Brackwasser-Alge in der Oder stattgefunden hat. Von einem natürlichen Phänomen gehen die Forschenden nach wie vor nicht aus, denn die Algenart Prymnesium parvum kommt auf den betroffenen Oder-Abschnitten unter natürlichen Bedingungen nicht massenhaft vor. 

The environmental disaster on the Oder river also leaves researchers from the IGB in a great sense of shock. They the are currently tracking down a strong toxin that can be produced by the algae species Prymnesium parvum. Even if this suspicion is confirmed, it is not a natural phenomenon, but definitely a man-made problem.

Low-growing species such as stoneworts were last sighted in the Müggelsee over a century ago. Now, after 20 years of intensive mapping and diving surveys, not just one but three of these desirable species of underwater vegetation have been found.
