At IGB, we offer internships in three different fields of work, each lasting two weeks.
There is no fixed start date for our internships. Please send your application, including a letter of interest (approximately one A4 page long) and your most recent school certificate, to the relevant contact person at least eight weeks before the intended start of the placement.
Placements are allocated based on available capacity and the suitability of applicants.

Fish Husbandry

Various species of fish swim in our aquarium hall and outdoor enclosures. Foremost among them are the sturgeons, which are considered extinct in Germany. We at IGB coordinate the programme to reintroduce these animals into our waters. During your internship, you will assist us with fish care, i.e. feeding, as well as monitoring water quality and husbandry conditions. You will also help with cleaning the tanks, fish need to be weighed or moved, or laboratory work needs to be prepared.

This internship is offered to one person at a time, 2–3 times a year. This opportunity is not accessible to people with disabilities. The contact person is Marcus Ebert >

Laboratories

IGB’s laboratories are always in need of support, whether it be with preparing experiments and taking samples or with analysing results. Under the microscope, you can examine and count algae or tiny creatures. In doing so, you will work closely with the laboratory staff who assist the researchers with their experiments. From time to time, you’ll also head out into the ‘field’ to collect data and take samples. This will give you an insight into the various activities at IGB.

Public Relations

The Communications and Knowledge Transfer team focuses on making often complex research accessible to the general public. This is achieved through press releases, events, the IGB website and social media. During this internship, you will discover just how varied the field of science communication is. The focus is not on conducting research yourself, but on writing your own easy-to-understand texts, organising events and creating content for the website and social media.
