The Living Floodplains: Learn, Explore, Restore4Life Digital Toolbox is an interactive learning platform designed for teachers, students and interested citizens. It provides a clear explanation of how floodplains and wetlands function and highlights the importance of their protection and restoration for the climate, biodiversity and society.
Floodplains store carbon, regulate water systems and reduce flood risks; however, they are among Europe’s most threatened ecosystems. The toolbox demystifies these complex relationships and encourages active engagement.
The platform combines scientifically sound content with interactive features, including:
- engaging, game-based illustrations introducing key topics
- practical teaching materials based on the 5E model
- a curated collection of environmental education resources from across Europe
- additional tools such as online games, workshops and a citizen science app
In this way, the toolbox promotes knowledge, critical thinking, and active involvement in protecting and restoring floodplains and wetlands. It was developed as part of the Horizon Europe project Restore4Life, in which IGB played a key role.
