Bringing movement behaviour into metapopulation models

Bringing movement behaviour into metapopulation models

Abstract: Metapopulation models are a powerful modelling tool as they allow us to divide ecological mechanisms into those that affect local dynamics within a patch, and those that lead to between-patch movement. However, there is a conceptual hole at the heart of metapopulation biology: there is no clear definition of what should constitute a “patch” of habitat in fragmented and heterogeneous landscape. In this talk, I argue that we can use estimated or predicted patterns of animal movement to estimate local encounter rates for individuals living in different parts of a landscape, and from this we can in turn estimate landscape patch structures. I show how we have applied this work to estimate spatial population structure for European Common Blue Butterflies in Montreal, and how we will be applying this to estimate population structure in fish populations in Lac Saint Pierre and James Bay.

IGB Colloquia open up!

IGB strives to facilitate and accelerate the exchange of knowledge and ideas within and also outside of IGB. One element contributing to inter- and transdisciplinary exchange, and more (scientific) cooperation and innovation, is to open up IGB Colloquia to an interested external audience from science (other research institutes, universities, laboratories) as well as practice (i.e. conservationists, freshwater/land-use managers, authorities, associations). If you would like to join this IGB Colloquium as a guest, we ask you to register until the morning of the colloquium 10 o'clock the latest. After we have checked your registration, you will receive the participation link.
