Change in the Institute’s leadership

Werner Kloas takes over on an interim basis

He is also a familiar face at the Institute. From 1999 to 2022, he headed the Department of Ecophysiology and Aquaculture. He then went on to lead the newly established Department of Fish Biology, Fisheries and Aquaculture together with Professor Jens Krause. Since 2024, he has remained closely associated with IGB as a guest scientist, working on projects such as ‘CUBES Circle’.

Professor Sonja Jähnig, who has been leading the Institute on an interim basis since October 2025, has taken up a professorship at the University of Duisburg-Essen and the new Research Centre One Health Ruhr. There, she will focus on ecosystem health.

We warmly congratulate Sonja Jähnig on her new position and wish her every success. We also would like to extend a warm welcome to Werner Kloas in his new role, and we look forward to working with him again.
