We study the evolution and ecology of freshwater biodiversity, applying molecular genetic/genomic tools and bioinformatics to a wide range of questions and problems. Focal organisms include insects, plankton, fungi, and microbes. Our work includes (1) basic research on response of organisms to environmental change, evolution and lineage diversification, (2) the development of new approaches and methods for studying freshwater biodiversity with molecular tools, and (3) providing an ecological component to large, interdisciplinary projects that seek to balance societal needs with biodiverse ecosystems. We play leading roles in the Berlin Center for Genomics in Biodiversity Research and the Alliance for Freshwater Life.
