How can angling clubs support fish and biodiversity? This question was addressed by representatives from research, nature conservation and the angling community in the BAGGERSEE project. Now they have presented their results.

Recent study with Robert Arlinghaus shows that the replenishment potential of many fish stocks is overestimated. This increases the risk of overfishing. Especially the largest fish should be protected to a greater degree than is presently the case.

The “Zeitschrift für Fischerei” (or “FischZeit” for short) is the first peer-reviewed, German-language journal for fisheries research that brings together knowledge on all aspects of commercial and recreational fisheries, aquaculture, stock management, and fish conservation in inland, coastal and marine ecosystems.

Researchers with Robert Arlinghaus have summarized how technical innovations can affect anglers, fisheries management and fish populations. 

Fishing primarily removes larger and more active fish from populations. It thus acts as a selection factor that favours shy fish, as a recent study by IGB shows. 

Will freshwater environments and fish populations benefit from the global COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions on the economy and society? Yes, in the short term, but probably not in the longer term – this is the conclusion of an international team of experts, including IGB scientist Robert Arlinghaus.

Researchers need data to generate scientific findings. Two new research methods – culturomics and iEcology – use the internet for this purpose. These approaches offer many opportunities, especially for the exploration of aquatic habitats.
