As a professional society, the German Limnological Society (DGL), which now has almost 1,100 members, offers excellent opportunities to maintain and establish contacts, pursue further education and training, and recognise the special achievements of its members. This is achieved through various funding instruments such as the Benndorf-Schwoerbel Young Scientist Award, the Practice Award and the promotion of innovative ideas through the ‘Get Started’ project for postdocs. The influx of many young people and the rising membership figures speak for the attractiveness of the society and limnology as a scientific discipline. Presidium elections were held this year. Two researchers from IGB are members of the newly elected executive committee: Anna Oprei and Michael Hupfer. Michael Hupfer will take over as president of the society on 1 January 2026. The next annual conference of the DGL will take place in Berlin-Adlershof from 14 to 18 September 2026, with IGB as the host institution.
