Aquatic fungi are among the least studied organism groups on Earth, yet they play a vital role in our waters. Hans-Peter Grossart cultivates fungal cultures from lakes to better understand their role in nutrient cycles – and to make them visible. High-resolution images of his work now form the basis of an extraordinary art project at Expo 2025 in Osaka.

To survive as a species, aquatic organisms have developed a wide variety of strategies. Millions of years ago, sturgeons used their bony shells to fend off predators and relocate their habitats, sulphur mollies survive in toxic, almost oxygen-free water, and fish stocks in the River Oder are gradually recovering from the 2022 disaster. However, there are limits to the resilience of organisms, and these can be seen even in the tiniest single-celled creatures.

Global change poses immense challenges to our society. To better understand and address these challenges, IGB has launched a new, visionary programme area. This initiative represents an important strategic development within an extraordinary item of expenditure.

The PONDERFUL project provides a large collection of open resources on how to foster ponds and pondscapes.

A new study led by the University of British Columbia (UBC), with contributions from IGB, has revealed alarming results: climate change could lead to an increase in bacterial and fungal infections in cold-blooded animals such as corals, insects and fish. 

Postdoctoral researcher Nedim Tüzün's new research project ECO-EVO ALAN is funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Fellowship. It focuses on how artificial light at night (ALAN) affects aquatic ecosystems, especially urban ponds. While the negative effects of ALAN on terrestrial ecosystems are well documented, there are still many unanswered questions about its effects on aquatic systems. 

Researchers from IGB sequenced the complete genome of the microalgae of the Oder disaster.They also identified the gene sequences that are responsible for toxin formation. This is an important step on the way to an early warning system. The study was published in the journal Current Biology.
