Profile
Expertise

My current research focuses on ecological effects of artificial light at night. Artificial light at night is a global phenomenon and one of the fastest-spreading anthropogenic environmental alterations, recognized as a threat to biodiversity. Worldwide, freshwaters are increasingly illuminated at night, which can have complex impacts on aquatic primary producers. I investigate how low-level nocturnal illumination by different light types influences communities of benthic primary producers, the periphyton. These results can help inform lighting policies to minimize ecological impacts of artificial illumination.

You can read more about my research in the interview here and here.

My further interests include nature photography. Visit seeing-nature.de for more.

SMART

The SMART Joint Doctorate focuses on the core areas of natural and engineering sciences relevant to the sustainable management of river systems from their headwaters to estuaries. SMART aims to provide education and research at PhD level by offering a 3-year programme within the Erasmus Mundus action. It adopts a multidisciplinary, multi-scale approach that integrates relevant aspects of the physical, chemical and biological sciences, including relevant theory, monitoring and modelling.
